Part of a Panathenaic amphora found in 1886 east of the Parthenon into two joining fragments that were pieced together.

On the exterior the vase is adorned with a painted boxing scene, set into a panel. The vase-painter, in order to indicate the age difference between the two opponents, depicted one of them with a thick beard and a moustache and the other one with sparse facial hair on his chin. Both men have their hands wrapped with thin leather strips called strophia or meilichai that protected them from injuries while at the same time assisted them in dealing stronger blows. The younger man’s posture, with the raised arm, signifies he admits his defeat. A bearded man with an obliquely worn himation, who is observing the contest is most probably a judge.
